Difficulty: A/B, 1300 m
Easy but long via ferrata up the Traunstein (1691 m) with climbing sections ranging from easy to moderately difficult.
Back in 1994, the lower part of the Naturfreundesteig looked completely different.
The first 200 m went almost straight up over ladders.
In 2001 the route was completely changed because of the constant rockfall danger in the lower part.
Now you simply follow the forest road up to the tunnels.
The entry to the Naturfreundesteig is on the left side, right after the second tunnel.
The route is NOT continuously secured with cables, is very exposed in places, and should definitely not be underestimated!
The brittle rock means there is a high risk of rockfall.
Take a look at the memorial plaque in the little chapel at the foot of the wall. ;-)
Good fitness, a head for heights and surefootedness are absolute must-haves!
Even the “easiest” descent via the Mair Alm still demands some concentration.
